Kansas rowing’s Novice 8 earns first place at Tulsa Fall Invite

CATOOSA, Okla. – Kansas rowing’s first day at the Tulsa Fall Invitational on the Verdigris River was highlighted by first-place finish by KU’s Novice 8 ‘A’ boat on Friday.

The regatta, hosted by the University of Tulsa, was in a head race format – a time-trial competition where rowers race against the clock.

Kansas fielded three Novice 8 boats, with the first-place ‘A’ boat clocking in at 15:36.6. KU’s Novice 8 ‘A’ team is comprised of coxswain Katie McWhirter, Reese Arnold, Kate Mizell, Amelia Moore, Madison Ruffalo, Hailey Borden, Kalyn Blessing, Kaitlyn Finger and Morgan Kottas. The Jayhawks’ Novice 8 ‘B’ finished in third with a 16:58.5, while the Novice 8 ‘C’ finished fourth at 18:20.3.

The Jayhawks’ Varsity 4 ‘A’ featuring coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, Angie Allen, BriAnna Dittberner, Kaelyn Thierolf and Allison Schaaf finished second in the 13-boat competition with a time of 15:55.6, followed closely by the Jayhawks Varsity 4 ‘B’ at 16:12.6.

Katherine Young and Meghan Karoly were the fastest finishes in the 15-boat varsity pair race with a time of 17:13.6, good for third place.

Mackenzie Klaver finished second in the single sculling competition with a 19:17.1 time.

The regatta will conclude tomorrow with the Novice 4x set to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the Varsity 8+ at 9:30 a.m. and the Varsity 8+ Sprint Races at 10:00 a.m.
