Kansas tennis ranked No. 12 by ITA

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After a week of no matches, the Kansas tennis team checked in at No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) poll released Wednesday. That’s one spot below last week’s No. 11 ranking, the program’s highest ranking in over 20 years.

Kansas tennis has compiled a record of 4-1 in 2019, including two wins against Top-20 opponents. The Jayhawks beat Northwestern (then No. 19) and Illinois (then No. 18), to go along with a sweep at Wichita State and a home victory over Nebraska.

Six Kansas players are currently ranked in the ITA individual rankings:  Janet Koch (No. 50) and Anastasia Rychagova (No. 53) are ranked in singles, and the doubles rankings are full of Jayhawks – not surprising since KU has won the doubles point in all five dual matches this season.

The senior duo of Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia are ranked No. 3 in the nation with a 3-0 record together this spring. Kansas has four more doubles teams ranked: Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes (No. 41), Sonia Smagina and Koch (No. 47), Smagina and Ngounoue (No. 48) and Rychagova and Smagina (No. 57).
