Kansas tennis remains ranked in top-20 for 13th-straight week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas tennis team is ranked in the top-20 for the 13th-consecutive week, coming in at No. 20 for the second week in a row in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Tuesday.

Last Saturday, in its only match of the week, Kansas blanked Kansas State, 7-0, on Senior Day in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown.

The Jayhawks (16-4 overall, 7-2 in the Big 12) have won five-straight matches and are the No. 3 seed going into this week’s Big 12 Championship.

KU’s first doubles team of seniors Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia remains ranked No. 3 in the nation. This spring, the duo has notched a 15-1 record, including a 5-0 record against nationally ranked opponents. For the overall 2018-19 season, the tandem is 10-4 when playing against other ranked doubles teams.

Also in doubles, Kansas’ Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina have moved up a few spots in this week’s poll and are now ranked No. 71 with a 15-3 record this spring.

In singles, Rychagova has worked her way into the top-25, coming in at No. 22 this week.  She is 16-2 this spring, 8-2 against nationally ranked opponents. Throughout the fall and spring seasons combined, she has compiled a 9-3 mark against ranked foes. Fellow Kansas senior Koch is ranked No. 104 in singles.

UP NEXT
Kansas tennis is gearing up for the Big 12 Championship, which begins Thursday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center and the Sports Pavilion Lawrence, and is being hosted by Kansas Athletics. The Jayhawks’ first match will be at noon on Friday – a quarterfinal match against No. 6-seeded TCU.
