Kansas women’s golf concludes regular season with trip to Tulsa

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the final regular-season tournament of the 2016-17 season, the Kansas women’s golf team will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to compete in the Dale McNamara Invitational April 10-11. The Dale McNamara Invitational is the final tune-up before the Jayhawks head into postseason play at the Big 12 Championship April 21-23.

“The team seems to be feeling more confident after having a top-five finish in the Iowa tournament and beating teams ahead of us,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We have competed a lot in the last six weeks which is tough in some ways but also very good in that you learn and improve the most through competition.”

Kansas will be sending seven competitors to this next event.

After her performance at last week’s Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where she finished tied for 12th, freshman Yi-Tsen Chou will be competing for the Jayhawks in the first position.

Chomchana Phuchanbanchob, who carded a team-low 70 in the second round of the Hawkeye El-Tigre Invitational will follow Chou in the lineup.

The golfer who is currently posting a team-best 75.84 stoke average, sophomore Ariadna Fonseca Diaz will be playing in the third position.

Victoria Chandra, who finished last week’s event tied for 46th with Fonseca Diaz, will follow her Jayhawk teammate in the lineup.

Junior Pitsinee Winyarat, who, like Fonseca Diaz will be competing in her 10th event of the season will be in the fifth position.

For the first time this season, KU will be sending two golfers to compete as individuals. Xinyun Yu will be competing in her fourth out of five events as an individual. The other Jayhawk playing as an individual is Kallie Gonzales. Gonzales will be making her spring debut after competing in three tournaments in the fall.

“Our goal this week is no different than any other tournament which is to focus on the small details in our control,” O’Neil said. “(We need to be) mentally tough when things don’t go as planned and make committed decisions that will put us in the best possible position to score.”

The Dale McNamara Invitational features the smallest field the Jayhawks have faced all season, with nine teams competing. The competitors include host Tulsa, BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Missouri State, New Mexico State and Oral Roberts.

The two-day event begins with the first two rounds April 10 and concluding with the final round April 11, with 8 a.m., start times to begin both days.

The Dale McNamara Invitational will be held at the Tulsa Country Club, a par-70 6,112-yard course.
