KU tennis claims four singles wins over Denver

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After claiming two of the three doubles matches over Denver Saturday, the Kansas tennis team claimed four of the six singles matches over the Pioneers Sunday,  the final day of the Notre Dame Fall Invitational.

During the event, which is the final fall event for KU, the tournament format simulated dual matches. On the weekend, the Jayhawks downed Denver, Illinois and host Notre Dame. In all, KU posted an 11-7 singles record, while earning a 6-3 doubles mark.

“I thought (Sunday) was the best singles we played as a team this weekend,” head coach Todd Chapman said. “So, it is a good feeling to end the weekend on a strong note. We will take a few days off and get back to work during our offseason.”

Against the Pioneers Sunday, sophomore Janet Koch completed the weekend sweep with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Denver’s Maureen Slattery at No. 3 singles. At the event, Koch posted a perfect 3-0 singles mark along with a 3-0 doubles record. Koch teamed with sophomore Anastasia Rychagova on the doubles court for all three matches.

Sophomore Nina Khmelnitckaia downed Arisha Ladhani, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and also finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. Senior transfer Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin to finish the weekend 2-1 at No. 2 singles.

Freshman Maria Toran Ribes posted a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 win over Sonja Radosevic at No. 5 singles after playing No. 6 in the previous two matches against Illinois and Notre Dame.  Toran Ribes finished with a 2-1 singles record.
