KU Men’s Hoops Leads League in Home Attendance for 27th-Straight Season

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the 27th-consecutive season, Kansas men’s basketball has led its conference in home attendance. The NCAA released its 2012-13 attendance figures Wednesday and KU ranked 10th nationally.

Kansas averaged 16,438 fans for its 18 home contests. KU sold out its 17 games in Allen Fieldhouse, capacity of which is 16,300, and has a 197 game sellout streak dating back to the 2001-02 season. The annual Kansas City Shootout game at the Sprint Center is part of KU’s home ticket package and was at capacity (18,797) for the Kansas 84-78 win versus Oregon State on Nov. 30, 2012.

The Big 12 Conference ranked fourth among the 32 leagues with eight of its 10 schools ranking in the top 60 in home attendance for 2012-13. Following KU was Iowa State at No. 22 (13,393 average), No. 24 Kansas State (12,528), No. 32 Texas (10,945), No. 41 Oklahoma (9,890), No. 42 Oklahoma State (9,814), No. 49 West Virginia (8,752) and No. 59 Texas Tech (7,853).

Kansas was fifth nationally in all-game attendance with 596,905 total fans. Included was the 40,639 gate in KU’s NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game against Michigan at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on March 29. The contest was the highest attended round during the NCAA tourney excluding the Final Four.

Dating back to the Big Eight Conference era, KU has led its league in home attendance since the 1986-87 season, which includes the 17-year history of the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks have ranked 10th or higher nationally in home attendance in each of the last five seasons and 16 times in the last 18 years dating back to 1995-96. Since the NCAA began listing attendance figures in 1977-78, KU’s highest national rank has been eighth on five occasions – 2004-05, 2003-04, 1998-99, 1996-97 and 1992-93.
