Kansas’ Diallo Cleared to Play on Dec. 1

The NCAA released the following statement regarding Cheick Diallo at 2:15 p.m. Central time Wednesday, Nov. 25.

INDIANAPOLIS – On Nov. 25, University of Kansas men’s basketball student-athlete Cheick Diallo was cleared to play in the school’s Dec. 1 game.

The university provided new information to the NCAA on Nov. 20, including an independent review of Diallo’s coursework. Based on both the independent review and the Eligibility Center’s existing information, the NCAA approved his initial eligibility waiver.

“Our goal is to have eligibility decisions made prior to the start of a student-athlete’s season,” said Oliver Luck, NCAA executive vice president of regulatory affairs. “However, this was a complicated case involving international transcripts and a high school that remains under review. Additionally, staff considered a complex set of circumstances regarding amateurism.”

“I really want to thank the NCAA staff for guiding this process to a fair conclusion in what was a very complicated situation,” Kansas Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger said.

Based on the amateurism review, the NCAA concluded that Diallo received a limited amount of extra benefits. Therefore, Diallo is not eligible to play for five contests, including the four games Kansas has already played.

Kansas will play host to Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. (Central) in Allen Fieldhouse. The contest will be televised on Jayhawk IMG TV and ESPN3. KU will play its fifth game of the season tonight against Vanderbilt in the championship game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at 9 p.m. (Central) on ESPN.
