Dotson named national freshman of the week by CBS and the USBWA
LAWRECNE, Kan. – Kansas freshman Devon Dotson has been named the national freshman of the week, announced Tuesday by CBS Sports and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
Dotson’s honor stretches back the last three games where he averaged 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.3 steals. The Charlotte, North Carolina, guard’s best game came in Kansas’ 82-77 overtime win at TCU on Feb. 11 where he posted career highs in points, with 25, and rebounds, with 10, to go along with five assists and two steals in logging all 45 minutes of the contest. Dotson was clutch down the stretch and in overtime where he scored KU’s final six points from the free throw line to seal the victory.
For the week, Dotson was 18-for-35 (51.4 percent) from the field and 15-for-18 from the free throw line with 14 assists and seven steals. This is the second weekly honor Dotson has earned this season. He was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 31.
According to CBS, Dotson’s clutch performance at TCU put him over the top for the weekly award against the likes of Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett (Duke), Naz Reid (LSU), Coby White (UNC) and Giorgi Bezhanishvili (Illinois).
Dotson averages 12.0 points per game, including a 13.2 ppg in conference games played. In all games, he ranks sixth in the Big 12 in assists at 3.6, 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.5 and sixth in steals at 1.6. He also ranks among the league leaders in scoring average (18th at 12.0), field goal percentage (10th at 49.2) and free throw percentage (seventh at 78.6).
No. 14 Kansas (19-6, 8-4) will host West Virginia (10-14, 2-9) on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. (Central) on ESPN.
