Jayhawks Back at No. 1

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas returned to No. 1 in both national polls after clinching at least a share of its 12th-straight Big 12 regular-season title and maintaining a nine-game winning streak that has included wins over four nationally-ranked teams and two top-10 teams. Additionally, Kansas is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA RPI for the third consecutive week.

The Jayhawks shifted from No. 2 to a consensus No. 1 in both polls by receiving 63 first-place votes in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 and 31 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Kansas was also No. 1 in both polls during the week of Jan. 11.

Kansas holds the longest active streak for consecutive weeks ranked (140 AP/147 Coaches). The streaks started nearly seven years ago on Feb. 2, 2009, but differ in length because USA Today publishes an extra Coaches’ poll in March each season.

During a season which has featured a slew of top-10 upsets, Kansas joins No. 6/6 Oklahoma as the only two teams that have remained in the top-10 of both national polls for the entire season.

Under Coach Bill Self, Kansas has been ranked in the AP Top 25 for 226 weeks, which includes 164 weeks in the Top 10, 95 weeks in the Top 5 and 23 weeks at No. 1. In the USA Today Coaches’ Poll under Self, Kansas has been ranked 239 weeks, with 177 weeks in the top 10, 109 weeks in the top five, and 24 weeks at No. 1.
