PALM DESERT, Calif. – Coming off a solid first day, No. 39 Kansas men’s golf (+12) jumped up one spot to a tie in fourth place overall with No. 47 Colorado State after the second day of the Desert Intercollegiate after posting a 291-team score.
Sophomore Harry Hillier had one of those days where he could do no wrong. He finished the day 8-under par for a career-best 64-round to help him move up 59 spots to be tied for fifth place amongst the 120 players. Harry was 4-under through the first four holes thanks to an eagle on the fourth hole par-five. He would go on to finish the front nine 6-under before posting a 2-under score on the back half.
Senior Charlie Hillier pared his first five holes on the 7,305-yard, Par 72. Charlie finished the day tied for 41st with his 6-over par performance. Sophomore Ben Sigel shot a 1-over on the back nine and is currently tied for 62nd. Redshirt freshman Jeff Doty concluded round tied for 41st going into the final round after finishing the day with a 74 (+2). Junior Andy Spencer collected three birdies on the front nine and will head into round three eight-over par, tied for 52nd.
No. 18 Texas Tech leads the field after two days at 572 (-4) after finishing the day 6-under. Boise State (574) and TCU (575) round out the top three.
Redshirt sophomore Drew Shepherd started off his day with a birdie and collected three total birdies on the day, finishing six-over par on the day for his individual round.
Round two of the Desert Intercollegiate will begin at 9 a.m. (central) Sunday morning. The live scorecard updates here.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel
Q: What did you see Harry Hillier do well today, which led to his 8-under par performance?
A: Harry was impressive today. When he gets in the right frame of mind and gets a little momentum he can go low. Less wind today, but the course was still playing difficult.
Q: As a team overall, what do your guys need to improve on in order to have a couple stroke in order to compete for first place tomorrow?
A: We need some production out of the other guys. We keep making unforced errors and turn solid rounds into bad rounds. We need all the guys playing well on Sunday if we have a chance to move up the leader board.
