Jayhawks head to San Antonio looking for another title

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Coming off the heels of its first win on the season, the Kansas men’s golf team will travel to San Antonio, Texas, for the Lone Star Invitational. The 12-team event will take place Monday and Tuesday, and is hosted at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club, marking the first Jayhawk appearance at the course.

“This will be a new venue for us so we need to do a good job in the practice round,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “Getting familiar with the golf course and the grass is going to be key.”

Despite a new course, the Jayhawks will send out a familiar lineup. Bermel decided to stick with the same order that earned his team the 2018 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate title in Scottsdale, Arizona just two weeks ago. Sophomore Andy Spencer— fresh off of his third top-5 finish on the season— will be the frontrunner for the crimson and blue. Behind Spencer will be senior Daniel Sutton, followed by junior Charlie Hillier, senior Daniel Hudson and freshman Harry Hillier. Also making an individual appearance will be junior Jake Scarrow.

Should the lineup bring another title back to Lawrence, it will mark the second time in Bermel’s six seasons at Kansas that his team will have won back-to-back titles; the other coming during the 2016-17 season, when the Jayhawks won the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the Bayou City Collegiate Championship in consecutive weeks.

“We need to do what we did in our last outing— play mentally tough and keep grinding on each hole,” said Bermel. “If we can do that, then good things will happen.”

Monday’s first and second rounds are set to start at 8:30 a.m. CT, with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
