Jayhawks Open 2017-18 Campaign at Badger Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Coming off one of the strongest seasons in program history, the Kansas men’s golf team will start this season at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin Sunday. The 54-hole event at the University Ridge Golf Course starts Sunday and ends Tuesday.

The Jayhawk lineup will consist of junior Charlie Hillier, seniors Daniel Sutton and Daniel Hudson, sophomore Andy Spencer and junior Jake Scarrow. With all five returners in the starting five, the Jayhawks have veteran leadership in place to kick the season off.

“We have a lot of experience in the top five,” said head coach Jamie Bermel. “Our seniors have played virtually every tournament for the past three years.”

Along with the five returnees, freshman Ben Sigel will be making his Kansas debut playing as an individual at the event.

“This will be great for Ben,” added Bermel. “He gets to experience his first college event and learn firsthand what it’s like to play college golf.”

A new season means a fresh start, but the Jayhawks will once again turn to their seniors to lead the team this year. The tandem of Hudson and Sutton have been rocks for the crimson and blue, with Hudson being in the top 10 for career rounds in the 60’s and Sutton recording the second-lowest season average in 2016-17.

“For this team to be good, our seniors need to play well every week,” said Bermel. “I feel our depth from one to eight is solid, but we have no margin for error and we need to be ready to play on Sunday.”

The Badger Invitational field consists of 15 teams, headlined by 16th ranked Texas A&M and conference foes Iowa State and Kansas State. The Jayhawks last competed at the Badger Invitational in 2015, where they claimed the team title behind Chase Hanna and Hudson’s top-5 finishes, as both tied for third place.

Sunday’s action kicks off at 9 a.m., with live scoring available at Birdiefire.com
