Kansas looks to carry momentum to Arizona for Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Fresh off of a second-place result at the Badger Invitational, the Kansas men’s golf team will look for another top-three finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The event will be held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, and runs from Friday through Sunday.

Head coach Jamie Bermel will send out the same five golfers as he did last week, with junior Charlie Hillier leading the way, followed by seniors Daniel Sutton and Daniel Hudson and rounded off by sophomore Andy Spencer and junior Jake Scarrow. Freshman Ben Sigel will also be making his second-career appearance, both as an individual.

In the first tournament of the season, the Jayhawks were led by a career tournament from Spencer, whose second-day 65 was the lowest round of his career, and paved his way to a second-place finish individually.

Another Jayhawk looking to build off a strong season opener is Sutton. His top-10 finish was highlighted by rounds in the 60’s in two of his three rounds. Sutton currently sits at 13th on Kansas’ career rounds in the 60’s list, just one round shy of current eGolf Tour and Web.com Tour golfer, Chris Thompson.

“The guys have been working hard in practice this week,” added Bermel. “I hope it carries over to this tournament.”

The Maui Jim Intercollegiate consists of 14 teams including Kansas, with some of the forerunners being No. 7 LSU, No. 18 Georgia Tech and No. 21 Arizona State.

“It looks like a good field,” said Bermel. “We’ll need to see improvement each day.”

The tournament begins Friday at 9:30 a.m., with the first Kansas golfer taking the tee at 11:10 a.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com
