Kansas signee Sigel continues in U.S. Open qualifying

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s golf signee, Ben Sigel, who signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) last November and will be an incoming freshman for the 2017-18 season, will move on to a U.S. Open sectional qualifier after advancing past the local round Tuesday afternoon.

Sigel played his round at 4-under par, earning a second-place finish at the local qualifier at the Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. Matching a birdie on his third hole with a bogey on the fifth, Sigel collected birdies on three of his last four holes on the front nine, to make the turn at 3-under par. Two additional birdies and a late-round bogey on the 17th hole gave Sigel a 68 on the day.

The No. 1 junior player in the state, according to the Minnesota Golf Association, will move on to a sectional qualifier, where he will have a chance to earn a spot competing in the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.

Sigel joins current Kansas golfers senior Chase Hanna and junior Daniel Hudson, who both advanced at their local qualifier Monday.
