KU goes 2-0 to start Big 12 Match Play Tournament

HOCKLEY, Texas – Kansas opened the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament going 2-0 with identical 3.5-2.5 victories against TCU and Texas Tech at the Houston Oaks Golf Club Friday.

The Jayhawks opened the five-round match play event on Friday morning with a first-round victory over TCU. KU senior Charlie Hillier returned to line-up with a phenomenal round as he did he not lose a hole in defeating TCU’s Pierre Mazier 6&4. Sophomore Harry Hillier and junior Andy Spencer also posted first round of match victories. Senior Jake Scarrow birdied his final two holes to halve his match and secure a Jayhawk team victory.

Round two against Texas Tech resulted in the same final as KU won the round with three outright victories by Charlie Hillier, junior Andy Spencer and sophomore Ben Sigel. Harry Hillier’s tie gave KU the team edge.

Kansas currently is tied at the top of Pool A with the No. 1 team in the tournament, and the nation, Oklahoma State. The Cowboys defeated Texas Tech and West Virginia Friday.

QUOTES
Kansas Head Coach Jamie Bermel
“It was a total team effort today. The Hillier’s and Andy played well all day. I think we need to do a better job on the par 5’s, but I will certainly take the two wins today. Jake Scarrow made two birdies on his last two hole and a great putt on his 18th hole to halve his match and get us the win in the morning.”

“We need to keep doing what we have been doing – playing efficient and put pressure on the other teams we play.”
