Round One Results

AWENDAW, S.C. – Entering Monday’s second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, the Kansas men’s golf team will look to climb the leaderboard after finishing Sunday’s opening day of the event tied for eighth place, shooting a 291 (+3). The Jayhawks sit just two strokes away from the top-five, as Charleston Southern leads all teams with a score of 273 (-15).

“We played pretty average today and unfortunately had two guys shoot four-over, so we had to count one of them,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “It’s a solid golf course and we need to be patient out here, but I think we can do better the next two days.”

Leading the way for the Jayhawks was freshman Charlie Hillier, who is currently tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. The 70 (-2) he recorded in the first round makes this the ninth time this season that he has carded a score of even par or better in an opening round. He stands six strokes behind overall individual leader Taylor Zoller of Charleston Southern.

Behind Hillier on the Kansas leaderboard is senior Ben Welle. After starting the day on the back-nine and shooting a 3-over, Welle managed to fire off a bogeyless front-nine and shoot a 3-under on those first nine holes. His 72 (E) in the opening round was good enough for him to crack the top-25, as he finds himself tied for 22nd.

Sitting tied for 31st is Welle’s fellow senior Connor Peck, who carded a 73 (+3) and will look to move up on the leaderboard to claim his eighth top-20 finish of his senior campaign.

Rounding off the group Jayhawks representing Kansas at this event is junior Chase Hanna and sophomore Daniel Hudson, who both shot an opening round score of 76 (+4) and are tied for 52nd. Hudson is near the top of the tournament’s leaders in pars recorded, as the 14 he scored on Sunday ranks tied for fifth amongst the 75-player field.
