Men’s golf selected to third-straight NCAA Regional Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the third-consecutive year, the Kansas men’s golf team earned an at-large bid and will make an appearance at the NCAA Regional Championship. The No. 8-seed Jayhawks will head to Stockton, California, to compete against 12 other teams at The Reserve at Spanos Park for a spot in the NCAA National Championships.

“I like the location,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “I’m sure the golf course will be a good test, and any time we play in postseason, the level of competition rises even more.”

This not only marks the third-consecutive appearance at the Regional competition for the Jayhawks, but it also is the 20th time in program history that the team has been selected.

The three-day Regional event will begin May 14. Other notable teams heading to California alongside the Jayhawks are No. 6 LSU, No. 7 Alabama, No. 13 Stanford, No. 21 USC and fellow Big 12-counterparts No. 32 TCU and Iowa State.

The top-5 schools from each of the six regions will advance to the National Championship tournament, which will be held in Stillwater, Oklahoma from May 25-30. Along with the 30 final schools, the top six individuals from non-qualifying schools will get a chance to compete for an individual title.

Though the stakes are high, Bermel knows that the opportunity to play in the postseason is an accomplishment that his team should take pride in.

“I’m happy for the team, because they worked so hard this year,” said Bermel. “They deserve to be rewarded with another Regional selection. That’s the goal every year for this program, to make it to postseason play. Once we get there, we need to perform well or the season is over.”
