Spencer, Hanna finish 1-2 at Watson Challenge

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas sophomore Andy Spencer earned a 7-stroke victory Sunday at the 2017 Watson Challenge at the Milburn Country Club topping former teammate and recent KU graduate Chase Hanna for the medalist honors.

Entering the third and final round, Spencer owned a 3-stroke lead over Hanna, the 2015 Watson Challenge Champion. Spencer put the match out of reach with his second-straight 67, marking the best round of the event, to finish with a 12-under, 204.  Hanna shot a first round 69 and the tournament namesake, Tom Watson, fired a 69 in his final round Sunday for the only four scores in the 60s all weekend.

Over the final round, Spencer carded birdies on holes No. 3, No. 5 and No. 8 over the front nine, while adding two more on the back at holes No. 14 and No. 16.  He never scored above par on the day and ended the event with 16 birdies.

Hanna, the event leader after the first round, after shooting the aforementioned 69, followed up with back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish runner-up with a 5-under, 211.

Watson finished tied for 13th at 6-over.
