Sutton becomes second Jayhawk to qualify for U.S. Amateur

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Daniel Sutton, who will begin his senior season at Kansas in the fall, became the second member of the Jayhawk golf team to qualify for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship, after earning co-medalist honors Monday at the qualifier played on the Finkbine Golf Course.

Sutton will join incoming KU freshman Ben Sigel in the 312-person field at the U.S. Amateur Championship August 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

“Awesome playing by Dan,” head coach Jamie Bermel said.  “It is good to see another Jayhawk in the field of the U.S. Amateur.”

The qualifier consisted of two rounds, both of which were played Monday. Sutton fired a 3-under 69 in each of the rounds to finish 6-under for the event.

In the first round, Sutton carded five birdies, including three-straight on holes 5, 6 and 7. A pair of bogeys on the back nine put him at 69 for the round.  After four-straight pars to open the second round, Sutton scored an eagle on the fifth hole and followed with back-to-back birdies.  He finished with eight total birdies on the day.
