Men’s Golf to Compete at Irish Creek in Charlotte
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas men’s golf team will return to action at the Irish Creek Collegiate at the Club at Irish Creek in Charlotte, N.C., April 5-6. This is the third-straight year KU has competed at the Irish Creek.
Kansas placed in the top half of the field in 2013 where the Jayhawks finished in seventh out of 17 teams, with an 872 (+20). In 2012, when the Jayhawks made their first trip to Irish Creek, they placed in eighth with a final score of 870 (+18).
The Jayhawks look to climb the leaderboard at this event while being represented by the same five players that competed in the Desert Shootout two weeks ago. Those competitors include freshman Chase Hanna, sophomores Conner Peck and Ben Welle, junior Logan Philley and senior Ryley Haas.
Hanna is one of three Jayhawks who has competed in every tournament in 2013-14. Hanna hopes to add his fifth top-20 performance of the season at the Irish Creek. Hanna has led the Jayhawks in individual scoring in five of the eight tournaments his freshman campaign while averaging 72.79 strokes per round.
As Haas’ time as a Jayhawk is coming to an end he is hoping to finish strong as he looks to build off his career best tournament at the Desert Shootout where he recorded a 218 (+2). Haas is currently averaging a 75.67 strokes per round this season.
Joining Hanna in competing in every tournament thus far is Philley and Welle. Philley has led the Jayhawks in scoring in one tournament this season (The Desert Shootout) while averaging 74.83 strokes per round. Welle is in second in leading the Jayhawks as he has been KU’s top finisher twice this season at the Ram Masters Invitational and the Give ‘Em Five Invitational while averaging 73.13 strokes per round.
Rounding out the Jayhawk five is Peck who is competing in his sixth-straight tournament. Peck quickly earned a spot in the rotation for the Jayhawks as he is averaging the third lowest strokes per round on the team at 73.47. Peck is still in search of his first top-20 finish after coming close in the Give ‘Em Five Invitational where he finished in a tie for 22nd with a 217 (+1).
The Irish Creek Collegiate will be played on a 7,099-yard, par-71 course at the Club at Irish Creek. The 16-team field, co-hosted by Charlotte and Davidson will feature Kansas, Akron, Appalachian State, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia State, Indiana, North Florida, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Richmond, UNC Wilmington and Wake Forest
The tournament will be played over two days where the competitors will see 36 holes on Saturday April 5 and 18 holes on Sunday April 6. The competitors are set to tee off the first round at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
