IOWA CITY, Iowa. – Behind sophomore Chase Hanna, the Kansas men’s golf team sits in sixth after day one of the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
 
Iowa State is leading the event with a 563 (-13), followed by the host Iowa, who is one stroke back, shooting a 564 (-12). Idaho is in third shooting 566 (-10). Kansas is in sixth shooting a 580 (+4).
 
“We didn’t play very well in the morning round, but we played better in the afternoon in windy conditions,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said.
 
Hanna led the Jayhawks in the first two-rounds and is tied for eighth after day one, carding four birdies in the morning round and two more in the afternoon round. Hanna is three strokes out of second-place. Hanna is at 141 (-3) on the day. Junior Ben Welle carded six birdies and one eagle on the day to shoot 144 (E). Welle sits tied for 19th in the 66-golfer field.
 
“Chase and Ben were really steady today,” Bermel said. “Chase had a bogey free round in the afternoon.”
 
Junior Connor Peck sits tied for 19th with Welle carding nine birdies on the day to shoot 144 (E). Freshman Daniel Hudson is tied for 43rd shooting a 151 (+7). Freshman Spencer Painton, playing as an individual, is tied for 48th. Painton shot 152 (+8). Redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch is tied for 56th shooting 155 (+11). The overall leader in the event is Louis Cohen Boyer of Wichita State, who shot 131 (-13).
 
“We need to do a better job on the par fives in the third round,” Bermel said. “If we do that, we can hopefully put together a solid round.”
