Jayhawk Chris Thompson Qualifies for U.S. Open

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Former Kansas men’s golf All-American Chris Thompson qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open by shooting a two-round 136 (-4) at Springfield (Ohio) Country Club June 2. Thompson will join fellow Jayhawk alum Gary Woodland in one of golf’s upcoming majors’ field.

Thompson shot a 4-under 66 in his morning round and an even-par 70 in the afternoon to finish third in the 63-competitor field, qualifying for the U.S. Open which will be played on the prestigious Pinehurst 2 Course at the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina, June 12-15.

A 1998 and 1999 All-American at Kansas, the U.S. Open is the second PGA event in Thompson’s career with the first being last month at the Byron Nelson in Irving, Texas, May 15-18. Thompson, who calls Lawrence, Kansas, home, made the cut and finished tied for 64th at the Byron Nelson.

Woodland, from Topeka, Kansas, is 46th in the world golf rankings with those rated in the top 60 being exempt from needing to qualify for the U.S. Open. He also received an exemption by competing in the 2013 Tour Championship. Woodland, a two-time All-Big 12 performer while at KU in 2006 and 2007, has made 14 of 15 cuts during the 2014 PGA season with five top-10 finishes. He placed tied for seventh at the Byron Nelson.
