KU’s Welle Wins the 82nd Pine to Palm Golf Tournament

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s golfer Ben Welle went four-and-three in the final match to defeat Matt Rachey at the 82nd Pine to Palm Golf Tournament at Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, August 11-17.

Welle, a junior from Moorhead, Minnesota, was consistent shooting two qualifying three-under-par rounds 68-68-136 (-6).  He tied for second in the 152-golfer field entering the 64-golfer match play.

Welle won six matches to reach the title. Welle defeated Drew Massey, 4 and 3, in the first round on August 14. He then proceeded to beat John Sund (3 and 2) in the round of 32 August 15. Throughout the next two days, Welle edged Connor Holland in the round of 16, Coy Papachek in the quarterfinal and Mark Robinson in the semifinal match (1 up).

Welle carried the momentum into the final match against Rachey to become the 82nd Pine to Palm Champion winning 5 and 4.

Welle, who transferred to Kansas for the 2013-14 season, has played in 11 tournaments at Kansas. He led the team in scoring in three different events last year, while ranking as one of KU’s top two finishers in six events.
