LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind junior Connor Peck, Kansas men’s golf will return to the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin, September 28-30, for its third tournament of the 2014-15 season.

Last year KU finished runner-up to South Carolina at the Badger Invitational behind current sophomore Chase Hanna’s fifth-place finish.

Kansas has posted two top-three finishes in its two events this year which includes third place at the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7) and second at the Ram Masters Invitational (Sept. 15-16).

“It is always nice getting the year started off right,” Peck said. “We are definitely making progress and as a team. We are always looking to win.”

Peck started the season with a top-10 finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, where he tied for seventh with a three-round score 212 (-1). He also recorded a top-20 finish at the Ram Masters Invitational, where he tied for 13th with a three-round score 217 (+7). Peck is averaging 71.5 strokes per round for the Jayhawks, which includes three rounds of par or under.

“Golf is a sport where obviously you can do better,” Peck said. “It is definitely a solid start to the year, but there is still a few things I can tighten up.”

For the Badger Invitational, the Jayhawks will consist of juniors Ben Welle and Peck, Hanna, and freshmen Gary Daoust and Daniel Hudson. Junior David Auer will be playing as an individual. Welle leads the team in scoring with a 70.4 per round average followed by Peck’s 71.5 and Hanna at 71.83. This will be Daoust’s and Auer’s first tournament of the season.

“I think Chase is starting to get into a groove right now and I know he likes that course a lot,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Ben Welle has improved from last year. I am counting on those two to play well for sure.”

Hanna is coming off of a runner-up finish at the Ram Masters Invitational, where he shot a three-round 211 (+1) including two 68s in his final two rounds.

The Badger Invitational will be played on a 7,259-yard, par-72 course at University Ridge Golf Course with three days playing 18-holes, Sept 28-30. Kansas will be competing against Bowling Green, Bradley, Charleston Southern, Drake, Illinois State, Iowa State, Maryland, Marquette, Rutgers, Sam Houston State, Toledo, USC Upstate and host Wisconsin.

“I like 18 holes each day because you can practice after the round,” Bermel said. “It’s not an endurance contest, more about golf. My biggest concern is Kansas. I am not concerned about any other teams. We need to go up there and do what we do best, that is play mentally tough and eliminate the minimal mistakes.”
