MADISON, Wis. – With junior Ben Welle shooting a final-round 73 (+1), the Kansas men’s golf team finished eighth at the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course Tuesday.
KU ended the tournament with a three-round 294-300-305—899 (+35). Welle led the Jayhawks with the support of freshman Gary Daoust, who played in his first tournament, who shot a final-round 74 (+2).
Kansas sophomore Chase Hanna and junior Connor Peck tied for 21st with a three-round 244 (+8). Hanna shot 73-71-80—244 and Peck shot 71-74-79—244. Welle and Daoust finished tied for 39th with a three-round 229 (+13). Welle shot 81-75-72—229 and Daoust shot 75-80-74—229. Senior David Auer played as an individual and tied for 60th with a three-round 79-79-78—236 (+20) in the 79-golfer field.
KU freshman Daniel Hudson was disqualified in his second round shooting a 75-DQ-79—154. Hudson’s second round 74 (+2) was declared disqualified after an incorrect drop. The team took Daoust’s second-round score 80 (+8) and losing six strokes entering Tuesday’s final round.
“It was a bad day overall,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We were late to the course because of mechanical problems with the van, to find out Hudson got disqualified. I think the ruling bothered several of the guys as we got off to a bad start.”
Sam Houston State won the tournament with a final round 295 (+7) and a three-round 283-293-295—871 (+7), one stroke ahead of Big 12 foe Iowa State. Iowa State’s Scott Fernandez won the individual title Tuesday with a three-round 75-72-66—213 (-3).
“We need to learn from this and do better at our next event,” Bermel said.
Kansas will next travel to the Sagamore Preview in Noblesville, Indiana, Oct. 13-14.
