Jayhawks Sit Tied for Fifth After Day One in Indiana

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Behind top-10 finisher junior Ben Welle, the Kansas men’s golf team sits tied for fifth after day one of the Sagamore Preview at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana.

Illinois leads the Sagamore Preview after shooting a two-round 570 (-6) and is eight strokes ahead of second-place Auburn, who shot 578 (+2). Northern Illinois is in third with a two-round 590 (+14), followed closely by UAB with a 591 (+15). Kansas and Louisville are tied at 592 (+16).

“We had tough conditions today, with a lot of rain in the morning and wind in the afternoon,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “The team battled pretty well, but had five penalty strokes in the afternoon that hurt us.”

Welle led KU by carding seven birdies and one eagle and is tied for eighth with a first round 73 (+1) and second round 71 (-1) in the 75-golfer field tallying a two-round 144 (E). He will enter the final round five-strokes behind the individual leader Thomas Detry of Illinois who is at 139 (-5).

“Ben Welle was solid today,” Bermel said.  “He just hung in there all day and was very efficient with two solid rounds.”

KU sophomore Chase Hanna is tied for 20^th with a two-round 149 (+5). Senior Logan Philley finished tied for 26^th shooting 150 (+6) and freshman Spencer Painton is tied for 32^nd shooting 151 (+7).  Junior Connor Peck is tied for 68^th with 159 (+15).

“I hope we can play tomorrow as the forecast doesn’t look good,” Bermel said.
