CARMEL, Ind. – Led by freshman Chase Hanna, who shot a team-best second round 72 (E), Kansas men’s golf shot a two-round total 618 (+42) Monday and enter Tuesday’s final round in 11th at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate here.

Hanna started off the day with a 77 (+5), giving him a two round total of 149 (+5) placing him in a tie for 15th on the individual’s leader board at the Crooked Stick Golf Club.

The Jayhawks began the day with a morning round of 315 (+25) and went on to shoot a 303 (+15) in the second round to end day.

“Obviously the first round wasn’t very good, the second round was better, but it is just a very hard course,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “This golf course will expose every weakness in your golf bag. We got exposed today a little bit. We shot better the second round and hopefully we will improve again tomorrow.”

KU sophomore Jackson Foth had a team-best first round 76 (+4) followed by a second round 82 (+10) placing him in a tie for 59th with a total of 158 (+14) in the 79-golfer field. Sophomore Ben Welle found his groove in the second round carding a 75 (+3) following a first round score of 83 (+11), bringing his total to 158 (+14), also putting him in a tie for 59th. Senior Ryley Haas began his 2013 season with a first round 82 (+10) followed by a 79 (+7) in the second round bringing his overall score to 161 (+17), placing him in a tie for 65th. Junior Logan Philley ended his day in a tie for 55th, with a second round 77 (+5), following a first round 80 (+8), which brings his total to 157 (+13).

“We just need to eliminate big numbers,” Bermel said. “We counted six to nine double bogeys today. I know they are going to make bad shots and have bad swings but shot ourselves in the foot several times by turning a mistake into a bigger mistake. And when we learn how to fix that we will see a lot of improvement.”

Georgia currently leads the event with a first round score of 295 (+7), followed by a second round 290 (+2), bringing its two-round total to 585 (+9). Florida State currently sits in second trailing Georgia by three strokes with a two round total of 588 (+12). The Jayhawks who sit in 11th and trail 10th place Toledo by two strokes.

The 54-hole event concludes Tuesday.
