NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Behind top-10 finisher Ben Welle, the Kansas men’s golf team finished tied for fifth at the Sagamore Preview at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana. The event’s third and final round was not played Tuesday due to unplayable conditions with heavy rain.

Illinois won the Sagamore Preview after shooting a two-round 570 (-6), eight strokes ahead of second-place Auburn, who shot 578 (+2). Northern Illinois finished third with a two-round 590 (+14), followed closely by UAB with a 591 (+15) and Kansas and Louisville at 592 (+16). The rain-shortened result gives Kansas its fourth top-10 finish in four events this fall, including three top-five outcomes.

“I was really disappointed couldn’t play today,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said.  “Unfortunately, there was too much rain and more on the way. I know the guys really wanted to play in these conditions and test their game on a tough course.”

Welle led KU by carding seven birdies and one eagle and tied for eighth with a first round 73 (+1) and second round 71 (-1) Monday in the 75-golfer field. The individual winner of the event was Thomas Detry of Illinois, who finished with a two-round 139 (-5).

KU sophomore Chase Hanna finished tied for 20th with a two-round 149 (+5). Senior Logan Philley ended tied for 26th shooting 150 (+6) and freshman Spencer Painton tied for 32nd shooting 151 (+7).  Junior Connor Peck tied for 68th with 159 (+15).

Kansas has two more events this fall, Oct. 24-26 at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational in El Paso, Texas, and Nov. 7-9 at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic at Lahaina, Hawaii.
