First Round Results

EL PASO, Texas – With nearly perfect weather conditions to play the beloved outdoor sport, the Kansas men’s golf team finds itself in a three-way tie for second with New Mexico State and St. Mary’s (CA), after day one of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas.  The Jayhawks shot a first round total of 279 (-9) and sit six strokes back behind overall tournament leader and host UTEP.

“We had a perfect day for golf and played pretty average,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said.  “We need to do a better job on the par-fives, as we only had a few birdies and they are fairly easy holes. We are not that far back and need a big round on Saturday.”

Appearing in his fifth event of his young career, freshman Charlie Hillier is amongst the tournament’s leaders, as he enters Saturday’s second of three rounds tied for sixth. Hillier has recorded the second most birdies (6) out of the 84-player field, helping him card a six-under, 68, in the first round.

Behind Hillier on Kansas’ leaderboard is senior Ben Welle, who carded six birdies on the first day as well.  His first round 69 (-3) marks the sixth time this season Welle has scored a round under par and the fifth time he has carded a round in the 60’s, both of which are team highs. Welle is tied for 11th in the event.

Heading into the second round, junior Chase Hanna and sophomore Daniel Hudson will look to move up on the individual leaderboard, as they are both tied for 30th, after carding a score of 71 (-1) Friday.

In his first appearance of the 2015-16 campaign, redshirt sophomore Jacques Wilson shot an even-par 72, where he recorded five birdies on the back nine alone.  After day one, Wilson finds himself placed in the top-50, finishing tied for 41st.

“Jacques got off to a hot start and overall had a pretty solid start to the tournament,” Bermel said.

Rounding off the Jayhawks was senior Connor Peck, who shot a first round total of 75 (+3) on day one.  Entering Saturday’s second round, Peck hopes to climb up on the leaderboard, as his is currently tied for 63rd.

The second round of the Price’s Give ‘Em Invitational will take place Saturday at 8 a.m. MT.  For live stats and up-to-date results, be sure to follow the event on golfstats.com.
