EL PASO, Texas – Poor weather conditions may have played a factor in Saturday’s second round of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational, however that did not stop the Kansas men’s golf team from finishing the day on top of the leaderboard. Heading into Sunday’s final round at Butterfield Trail Golf Club, the Jayhawks will look to grab its second tournament victory of the 2015-16 season.
“Well, we finished much better today,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “The conditions were much more difficult than yesterday and we played solid. The guys just toughed it out today and we played last hole five-under par, which was huge for us.”
Entering the third and final round on Sunday, Kansas will have three players in the top-15, as senior Ben Welle, junior Chase Hanna and freshman Charlie Hillier shot a combined 10-under par on the day. Their play in the second round helped the Jayhawks shoot a second round total of 276 (-12) and lead second-place Marquette by just one stroke.
Hanna posted a 66 (-5) on the day, which was good enough to move him up 30 spots and into the top five. Welle, who recorded a 69 in Friday’s second round, carded the same score on Saturday, giving him a two-round total of 138 (-6). He heads into the third round on Sunday also amongst the individual leaders, sitting tied for fifth.
As the only freshman representing the Jayhawks at the event, Hillier looks to claim his second top-10 finish of his young career. His second round 71 (-1) gives him a total of 139 at the tournament, good enough to be placed tied for 11th.
Moving up 24 spots on the leaderboard and into the top 45, senior Connor Peck continued the consistent play has had thus far in the season. On Saturday, Peck posted a 70 (-2), marking the fifth time this year he has carded a round under par.
Playing in his first tournament of the season as an individual, redshirt sophomore Jacques Wilson also climbed up on the leaderboard. His even par-72 in the second round, is the same score he recorded on Friday, totaling 274 (E) heading into Sunday’s final round.
Rounding off the Jayhawks was sophomore Daniel Hudson, who struggled to find his rhythm on Saturday, shooting a 79 (+7).
“It will be fun to be in the final group on Sunday, with a chance to win the event,” Bermel said.
