Philley Shoots Back-to-Back Under-Par Rounds to Place Jayhawks in tie for Fourth

EL PASO, Texas. – Kansas junior Logan Philley found his groove early in the UTEP Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in El Paso, Texas, as he recorded a morning round 70 (-2) followed by a second round 68 (-4). The two under-par rounds bring his total to 138 (-6) and puts him in a tie for seventh on the individual’s leader board.

Philley started the first round with an early double bogey on the Butterfield Trail Golf Course. Philley quickly recovered though as he went on to birdie five of the next nine holes. In the second round Philley picked up right where he left off as he recorded four-straight birdies early in the second round.

“I think he finally started to believe in himself,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said of Philley. “He’s starting to feel a little more comfortable. He’s a junior college transfer so there’s some adjustment there. But he played really well today and it was good to see.”

The Jayhawks as a team recorded their first two under par rounds as they shot a morning score of 283 (-5) and a second round score of 282 (-6) bringing their two round total to 565 (-11), which places them in a tie for fourth.

Sophomore Ben Welle joined Philley as he also shot back-to-back under-par rounds. Welle in the first round birdied four of his first nine holes which brought his score to 69 (-3). In the second round Welle recorded another four birdies bringing his second round score to 70 (-2) and his overall score to 139 (-5), which puts him in a tie for 10th. Freshman Chase Hanna continued his hot streak as he birdied three of his final six holes in the first round giving him a 71 (-1). In the second round Hanna shot 72 (E) bringing his two-round total to 143 (-1) and placing him in a tie for 24th.

Sophomore Conner Peck, in his second tournament of the year, recorded a 73 (+1) in the first round followed by a second round 72 (E) where he had four birdies. Peck’s two round score of 145 (+1) currently puts him in a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Jackson Foth recorded a first round 78 (+6), followed by a second round 74 (+2) bringing his total to 152 (+8) and placing him in a tie for 66th.

“We got off to a decent start today,” Bermel said. “We then kind of hit a lull, and then we finished really well coming in the first round. The second round was kind of the same thing where we finished really strong. Tomorrow we need all five guys playing well. If we can get off to a decent start and get some rhythm going maybe we can sneak up on a few teams.”

New Mexico State currently leads the event with 551 (-25) after shooting a morning round 278 (-10) followed by a 273 (-15) in the afternoon. San Jose State sits in second place, trailing the Aggies by eight strokes with a 559 (-17).

The UTEP Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational will conclude Saturday, Oct. 26, with 18-holes.
