Welle Leads Jayhawks in Final Round in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas. – Kansas sophomore Ben Welle birdied three of his final five holes in the UTEP Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in El Paso, Texas, as he went on to shoot a final round 70 (-2), bringing his three round total to 209 (-7) placing him in a tie for sixth.

The Jayhawks as a team recorded their best tournament score of the fall season as they shot an 854 (-10) following a third-round 289 (+1) on the Butterfield Trail Golf Course. Kansas finished in fourth place in the 15-team field, just behind third-place San Jose State who recorded an 853 (-11).

“The golf course played completely different today, with a different wind direction,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We played pretty solid but had to count two triple-bogeys and two double-bogeys. These four scores really hurt our team score. (Ben) Welle and Logan Philley had a solid tournament. Overall it was a pretty good event to end the fall season on.”

KU sophomore Jackson Foth, who struggled in the first two rounds, shot a 71 (-1) in the third round to shoot a three-round 223 (+7), putting him in a tie for 47th. Sophomore Conner Peck also contributed to the Jayhawks effort as he shot his second straight 72 (E) which placed him in a tie for 22nd with a final score of 217 (+1). Sophomore Logan Philley finished in a tie for 16th, which mark his first top-20 finish of the year behind a third round 76 (+4) and a three-round 214 (-2). The final member of the Jayhawk squad, freshman Chase Hanna, carded a third round 77 (+5), which brought his tournament total to 220 (+4) and placed him in a tie for 34th in the 95-golfer field.

“We need to train hard in the off-season,” Bermel said. “Hopefully we will be a better team come spring time.”

New Mexico State led the tournament wire to wire as the Aggies finished with an 836 (-28) following a third round 285 (-3). Colorado was the event in second with an 847 (-17), after shooting a final round 288 (E).

Kansas Men’s will resume action on February 21, as the Jayhawks travel to Wyoming for the University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
