Kansas defeats rival Nebraska
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas swimming and diving team set the tone the second they stepped foot inside Bob Devaney Sports Complex at their first away dual of the season in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Jayhawks left the dual against the Corhuskers with a exciting six-point win of 152-146 and gave it their all in the water.
Saturday’s events started with three wins in a row for the Jayhawks, making it clear that they were not going to make the meet an easy one for the Corhuskers. Kansas put down a total of seven individual wins in the duration of the dual meet creating a drive to win the intense competition.
The victory came down to the final 400-yard freestyle relay of the competition. Junior Jenny Nusbaum, sophomore Manon Manning, freshman Claire Campbell, and sophomore Lauryn Parrish put in a winning time of 3:26.28, the fastest of the season thus far, pushing Kansas past Nebraska.
In the diving well, junior Peri Charapich represented the Jayahkws. Charapich put down career-highs in both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 242.85 and 228.97, respectively.
KEY RACES
- The Jayhawks opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:43.91. The relay consisted of sophomore Manon Manning, senior Haley Downey, freshman Kaitlyn Witt and junior Carly Straight.
- Junior Jenny Nusbaum brought home gold in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:06.72.
- Sophomore Lauryn Parrish touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a winning time of 1:52.33.
- Freshman Kate Steward claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:03.53.
- Senior Haley Bishop took home gold in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.79.
- In the 10th event of the meet, junior Elizabeth Amato-Hanner placed first in the 200-yard backstroke 2:00.53.
- Steward put in her second win of the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 2:18.39.
- Nusbaum tagged the wall at 4:55.82 to give herself first-place in the 500-yard freestyle.
- In the final and winning event of the evening, the Jayhawks touched the wall first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.28. The relay team consisted of Nusbaum, Manning, freshman Claire Campbell and anchored by Parrish.

How their performance was as a team:
“You never really know how we will do after the training that we did this past week and driving up the day of. We talked to them about climbing a mountain and today was a big mountain for how difficult everything was. We faced some adversity and we came in against a team that swam great but we were able to match the energy. We talked about controlling the ‘controllables’ and our effort, attitude and our enthusiasm and they did a wonderful job. Very impressed with how the team is coming together.”
What sparked them with energy for the whole meet:
“I think the first couple events helped set the tone, we had a really good medley relay. We were actually faster then we were a couple of weeks ago and for coming off the bus the first event they lit it up. The ‘B’ relay was 1:45.72 and that was the fastest ‘B’ relay that we have been in a while. The thousands were really good and Lauryn came through in the 200-free. So I think those first three events had them feeling good. It gave them permission to swim fast, so we just got rolling and had a really nice meet.”
The last relay determining the Kansas win of the meet:
“Last night I had a feeling it was going to come down to the last relay, but I was really confident that both of our relays were going to be able to preform at a high level. All 8 athletes in both are ‘A’ and ‘B’ relays are contenders for the ‘A” relay at Big 12 so we have a lot of depth in the 100-yard freestyle, so when it comes down to the last relay we are pretty confident that we will do okay.”

The Jayhawks are set to host the sixth-annual Kansas Classic, a three-day competition scheduled for Nov. 16-18 in Topeka, Kansas inside Capitol Federal Natatorium.
