LAWRENCE, Kan. – Coming off a successful run at the 2018 Big 12 Championship, the Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to race at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, Nov. 9 at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois.

The women’s 6K race is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s 10K following at noon.

The Kansas women are coming off a historic Big 12 meet, where the team posted the best finish at a conference meet in school history, placing third overall. The men also had a strong outing at the conference race, placing fourth as a team.

Five Jayhawk runners earned All-Big 12 honors, including senior Sharon Lokedi who finished fifth, which was the best finish by a KU runner. Freshman Ally Ryan joined Lokedi on the women’s side, finishing 13th for her first All-Big 12 performance.

The men had three runners finish in the top-15 including Michael Melgares (10th), Ben Butler (12th) and Dylan Hodgson (13th).

Lokedi looks to run to her fourth-consecutive All-Region finish on Friday. The Eldoret, Kenya native has posted All-Region performances in each of the last three seasons, finishing third as a freshman and second as a sophomore and junior.

KU’s performance at Friday’s Regional competition will determine whether Jayhawks advance to the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Kansas women look to send the team to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2015, while the KU men’s team hopes to end an 11-year drought at the NCAAs, last qualifying in 2006.

In order to be one of the 31 teams that compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, Kansas must finish first or second as a team in their region or receive one of 13 at-large bids.

After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are chosen to compete at the NCAA Championships. Individuals that are not on qualifying teams can advance by finishing in the top four in their region. Additionally, two athletes that finished in the top-25 in their region will be selected to advance via the at-large process.

Any Jayhawk athletes that qualify for the NCAA Championships will compete on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
