During a cold and rainy 36 holes of golf at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa this past weekend, one Jayhawk was able to beat the conditions and walk away with a top-10 finish. Though the event was cut to just two rounds due to inclement weather, sophomore Andy Spencer launched a 3-over 147, which put him at a tie for eighth place.
Despite notching his team-best fourth finish inside of the top-10, his performance at the Hawkeye Invitational might have been the most challenging.
“The conditions were about as bad as I’ve ever played in,” said Spencer. “It was tough. The hardest part was trying to keep everything dry.”
Spencer made the most of the situation, as his 1-over 73 in the first round was the second-best Jayhawk score of the day, while his 2-over 74 was the best Jayhawk score during the second round.
Despite the weather factor, Spencer still managed to grab six birdies over the course of the event, which was the most on the team and 11th-most out of the field. In addition to the birdies on his scorecard, Spencer holed-out in three shots on a 577-yard par-5 during the second round, making him one of only 10 individuals to record an eagle through the rigorous wind.
On the season, Spencer leads the team in top-5, top-10 and top-20 finishes, while also posting the team-best round average with a 72.78. With the Big 12 Championship approaching, Spencer knows his recent performance through the difficult weather will help keep his season-long momentum going.
“I think it’s super important to be playing well this time of year,” said Spencer. “The Big 12 is one of the best, if not the best, conference in the country. I can’t wait to get down to Tulsa next week and see our team test itself against some of the best teams in the country, it should be a lot of fun.”
The Big 12 Championship will begin Monday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The first Jayhawk will tee off at 9:07 a.m. CT, and live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
