Huslig in fourth as multi-events kick off 91st Kansas Relays Presented by RCB Bank

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas track & field junior multi-event athlete Teri Huslig ended day one of the 91st Kansas Relays Presented by RCB Bank in fourth in the heptathlon with 2,592 points after four events, largely in part to her top finish in the day’s final event, the 200-meter dash.

Battling chilly temperatures and cutting winds the entire day at Rock Chalk Park, Huslig and fellow Jayhawk multi-eventer Morgan Griffiths were the first Jayhawks to compete at this year’s Kansas Relays. Things got underway in the heptathlon with the 100-meter hurdles, in which Huslig finished seventh with a wind-aided time of 15.65 seconds and Griffiths finished 11th with a wind-aided clocking of 16.19 seconds.

Huslig came up just shy of a personal-best in the day’s second event, the high jump, clearing 1.53 meters (5-0.25 ft.) to finish sixth and earn 655 points to add to her 758 she earned in the hurdles. Griffiths finished 12th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.44 meters (4-8.75 ft.) to tally 555 points, giving her 1,246 through the first two events.

Griffiths put together the better performance of the two Jayhawks in the shot put, finishing eighth in the event with a mark of 9.91 meters (32-6.25 ft.). Huslig came up with a mark of 8.77 meters (28-9.25 ft.) in the shot put to finish 15th.

Huslig bounced back from her performance in the shot put to post the top time of the day in the 200 meters at 26.78 seconds, earning her 730 points, while Griffiths finished the day with an 11th-place finish in the 200 meters to sit in 12th through the first four events of the heptathlon with 2,367 points.

Huslig and Griffiths will conclude the heptathlon on Thursday, starting with the long jump at 9 a.m., followed by the javelin at 9:45 a.m., before wrapping things up with the 800-meter run at 11:15 a.m.

A number of other Jayhawks will be in action on Thursday as well, with the start of the open collegiate portion of the meet getting started. After the conclusion of the heptathlon, the Kansas men’s pole vaulters will compete in the open section of the pole vault at 3:15 p.m.
