KU golf braces for Big 12 Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – With the 2017-18 regular season in the books, the Kansas men’s golf team will head to Tulsa to compete in the Big 12 Championship. The three-day event will be hosted at Southern Hills Country Club, and will begin on Monday with the first Jayhawk teeing off at 9:07 a.m. CT.

Of the 10 schools in the Big 12, five are ranked inside the top-17 of Golfweek’s latest rankings. Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel knows that this year’s Big 12 is competitive, and the No. 36 Jayhawks will have to bring their best game.

“From top-to-bottom, the Big 12 has been extremely competitive this year,” said Bermel. “Even though there are five teams in the top-25, there are three other teams that have a legitimate shot at postseason play.”

Bermel will go to the same lineup he has gone to for each of the last six events. Sophomore Andy Spencer will take the No. 1 slot for the Crimson & Blue, followed by senior Daniel Sutton and junior Charlie Hillier. The Jayhawk lineup will be rounded off be senior Daniel Hudson and freshman Harry Hillier.

The Jayhawks will head to Tulsa amidst a seven-tournament stretch, dating back to October, where the team has yet to finish outside of the top-5. Should the team tally its eighth-consecutive top-5 finish, it will push the season total to 10, marking the most in a season during Bermel’s six years at Kansas.

The Big 12 Championship treated the Jayhawks well last season, as the team walked away with a third place team-finish, the individual champion in Jayhawk golf alum Chase Hanna, and two members selected to the All-Big 12 team in Hanna and Hudson. Now, Bermel knows his team will have to be locked in if they want to have a repeat of last year’s successes.

“We need to play our game and focus on hitting fairways and greens,” said Bermel. “Southern Hills can be very difficult and we just have to be patient. Par is a very good score, so we’ll need to play very disciplined golf.”

Monday’s action begins at 9:07 a.m. CT, with live-scoring available at Big12Sports.com and golfstat.com.
