Four Jayhawks named to 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Teams

IRVING, Texas – Juniors Anastasia Rychagova and Nina Khmelnitckaia, along with
sophomore Maria Toran Ribes and redshirt-freshman Amber Policare, were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Khmelnitckaia, who is a sport management major, earned first-team honors for the first time in her collegiate career. As an economics major, this is Rychagova’s second year being recognized for her work in the classroom, but the first on the second team.

“It’s always important to us to not only do well on the court, but to do well in the classroom as well,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I’m proud of these young ladies for taking their studies seriously and furthering their education. Them doing well in the classroom is something that is extremely important to us.”

Toran Ribes, majoring in business administration, has now earned academic honors two years in-a-row after first being named to the rookie team and now, the second team. For Policare, also a sport management major, this is her first year for the recognition as she was selected to the second team.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
