Kansas signee Bradford qualifies for World U20 Championships; Jayhawks successful at junior nationals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Six present and future Kansas track & field student-athletes competed at junior national championships across the world over the weekend, and the results show great signs of things to come for the Jayhawk underclassmen.
 
SIGNEE BRADFORD TAKES USATF VAULT TITLE
KU signee Zach Bradford won the men’s pole vault at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, June 15-17. Bradford cleared a personal-best mark of 5.55 meters (18-2.5 ft.) to win the competition. Bradford’s winning height was more than enough to qualify him for the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, July 10-15.
 
EVANS TAKE SHOT PUT TITLE AT ENGLAND’S U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jayhawk freshman George Evans won the shot put at England’s U20 Championships in Bedford, England, June 16-17, with a mark of 15.54 meters (51-0 ft.). Evans also finished second in the discus with a mark of 55.18 meters (181-0 ft.).
 
OTHER NOTABLES FROM THE WEEKEND
• Kansas track & field alum Nick Caprario (2008-11) finished ninth at Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota on June 15, clocking in with a time of 2:18:01, which is under the “B” standard time of 2:19:00 for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
 
• Competing against KU signee Bradford in the men’s pole vault was fellow Jayhawk freshman Kyle Rogers. Rogers finished fifth in the competition with a clearance of 5.00 meters (16-4.75 ft.).
 
• KU signee Ally Ryan finished ninth in the preliminary round of the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.15 at the USATF Junior Championships.
 
• Freshman Honour Finley finished 10th at the USATF Junior Championships in the qualifying round of the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.25 seconds.
 
UP NEXT
Kansas will have a number of current and former track & field team members competing at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, June 21-24, as well as the Jamaican National Senior Championships at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on the same dates.
