2017-18 Season Highlights

  • The Jayhawks began their third season under head coach Brandon Schneider with a seven-game win streak, their best start since the 2012-13 season.
  • Kansas’ 7-0 start began with a historic 800th program victory, 66-48, over Campbell (11/12).
  • Junior guard Christalah Lyons paced the Kansas offense, boasting a team-best 14.8 points per game (152-of-353, 43.1 percent), earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in the process. The Dallas, Texas native netted double figures in 27 of KU’s 30 games in the 2017-18 season.
  • KU surpassed its previous win total from the 2016-17 season (eight wins) just 11 games into the 2017-18 campaign with nine wins before Big 12 Conference play began.
  • The Jayhawks traveled to New York City for their final nonconference games of the season going 1-1 in the Big Apple, while enjoying some sightseeing and a Broadway show on the five-day road trip.
  • Kansas began Big 12 play 2-1 after suffering an overtime loss to Iowa State (12/28). The Jayhawks won the next two games against TCU (12/31) and Texas Tech (1/3) to improve to 11-3 on the season.
  • Schneider picked up his first conference road win as Kansas’ head coach at Texas Tech (1/3).
  • Following a successful start to the season, the Jayhawks suffered a 12-game losing skid with multiple heartbreaking losses and playing in numerous competitive matchups with ranked foes throughout the losing streak.
  • Kansas celebrated its 50th season of women’s basketball against Kansas State in the Lawrence edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. During the 50-year celebration, Adrian Mitchell‘s No. 21 jersey was retired in front of a season-high 5,066 fans.
  • The Jayhawks ended their losing streak by upsetting No. 23 Oklahoma State, 66-59 (2/21). It was their first victory over a ranked opponent since 2014. The win over the Cowgirls was also KU’s first over a Big 12 foe since that same 2014 slate, when the Jayhawks snapped then-No. 7 Baylor’s 53-game conference winning streak.
  • The victory against Oklahoma State was Kansas’ third of the 2017-18 season, surpassing the previous season’s conference win total of two.
  • KU ended its best season under Schneider with a higher seed in the Big 12 Championship, seeded ninth.
  • Kansas made several improvements between the 2016-17 season and the 2017-18 season, increasing its numbers in five different statistical categories including field goal percentage, three different rebounding categories and matching its offensive mark from a year ago. Additionally, the Jayhawks decreased their number of total turnovers for the season.
  • The KU defense especially stood out throughout 2017-18, with Kansas’ scoring defense and field goal percentage defense ranking among the best in the Big 12 Conference and the nation during the season. The Jayhawks held their opponents to shooting 39.4 percent from the field during the season, while limiting its foes to shooting 31.6 percent from long range. Jayhawk opponents were held to 67.5 points per game throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
  • Five Jayhawks earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, including each of KU’s three seniors. Junior guard Kylee Kopatich and redshirt-sophomore center Tyler Johnson were named honorees this season in addition to seniors Chayla Cheadle, Eboni Watts and Sydney Benoit.
  • Kansas will have 10 players returning from this season to its 2018-19 roster.
