MADISON, Wis. – Following a 10-shot improvement from round one to round two, Kansas men’s golf sits in second place going into the final round of the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course. On Monday, the Jayhawks carded a second-round 282 (-6) and trail tourney leader Illinois State by two strokes.
On Monday, KU senior Charlie Hillier played even par golf on the front nine and would later eagle hole-16 to put him at 3-under on the day. His second-round efforts puts him at 2-under (142) and tied for seventh out of the 78 golfers competing. Iowa State’s Lachlan Barker leads the field, currently a 7-under (137).
Not to be outdone, Jayhawk sophomore Ben Sigel would also shoot 3-under for his second round. Sigel started the day hot, birdying the first two holes en route to his 3-under round. Sigel is tied for 20th with a two-round 146.
“Great bounce back by Ben and Charlie,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Both had a strong finish to the end of the day. Ben got off to a good start and played well the rest of the round.”
Jayhawk redshirt sophomore Drew Shepherd and sophomore Harry Hillier finished an even par on Monday, replicating their scores from day one. The duo are in a five-way tie for 12th at 144.
KU senior Andy Spencer got a handle for the course in round two as he improved three strokes, finishing even par on the day. Spencer has a two-round 3-over (147) and is tied for 25th along with Jake Scarrow, who is playing as an individual at this event.
“As a team, we were sharper today and played well from 1-5.” Bermel said. “We are going to need to have the same effort and focus again on Tuesday.”
Kansas (-2) and Illinois State (-4) are the only two teams under par in the 12-team field. Nevada is third at even par.
