Kansas freshmen shine at the Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas – Kansas tennis kicked off its fall 2018 season Thursday at the Big 5 Challenge at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

“It is always great to get back on the courts in a competitive situation,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “We saw some good things Thursday and we saw some things (we need) to continue to work on. We look forward to another day of competition Friday.”

The Jayhawks’ 2018 fall campaign did not start as anticipated as they dropped two out of three doubles matches all against teams from Notre Dame. KU’s freshmen tandem of Sonia Smagina and Malkia Ngounoue triumphed over Rachel Chong and Brooke Broda (6-1). Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence, ranked the No. 32 doubles team in the nation, overcame junior Maria Toran Ribes and freshman Julia Deming (6-4). The Kansas senior duo of Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia was downed by Ally Bojczuk and Bess Waldram (6-4).

KU’s singles matches are slated to begin Friday afternoon against Arizona at 12 p.m.

Live scoring is not available for the tournament, but the evening matches will have live streaming available here: https://www.playsight.com/#/livestreaming/tennis/texas-christian-university-tcu
