Inside Winter Training: Lilly Stewart

TAMPA, Fla. – Throughout Kansas rowing’s week and half training trip to Florida, various Jayhawks will give an inside look at what’s happening each day during winter training with the ‘Inside Winter Training’ Blog.

First up, senior rower Lilly Stewart kicks it off with the arrival and start to training at the Tampa River Center.

Friday marked our first full day in Tampa, which started off with breakfast at 7 a.m. During this trip, breakfast is very important because we put in a lot of meters, so we have to make sure we are fueling ourselves.

Our team of 60 gathered into the hotel’s dining center and took up every table. Let me tell ya, we can eat.

After breakfast, we walked across the street to the Tampa River Center for our first practice of the day. It’s really exciting to be back at this site. After my freshman year, the site was closed for construction, so we had to move further down the river. This is the first time I’ve been back since then.

We practice twice a day and normally get between 20-30k meters per practice. One practice will be a lot of steady state to work on our cardio vascular endurance, while the other practice normally is higher intensity. We never know what to expect and every day is different.

During the morning practice a dolphin stopped by to say hello.  Sometimes dolphins will swim along side our boat as we row by. It’s really cool!

This year, we are continuing to build our culture of champions. Every day we talk about our day and different aspects of what it means to be a champion. We do a lot of this at lunch and dinner. It really helps the underclassmen get acquainted with the rest of the team. This trip really helps the team and the coaches get to know each other better.

We put in a lot of work today and it’s just going to help the team get better and better.

Rock Chalk,
Lilly Stewart
