Cold-shooting plagues Jayhawks at Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Okla. – A cold-shooting first half plagued Kansas women’s basketball at Oklahoma State as the Jayhawks fell, 72-52, to the Cowgirls on Saturday afternoon, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Despite outscoring the Cowgirls in the second half, Kansas (12-14, 2-13) couldn’t recover from its poor shooting in the first 20 minutes.
The Jayhawks headed into the locker room, trailing 38-17 at the break, after shooting just 16.7 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Kansas and Oklahoma State each put up 14 points in the third quarter with nine of KU’s 14 coming from freshmen Aniya Thomas and Brooklyn Mitchell. Despite trailing 52-31, Kansas had its best shooting quarter of the game, connecting on 27.8 percent of its attempts from the floor.
The Jayhawks closed out the game scoring 11 of the last 17 points and outscoring the Cowgirls, 21-20, in the final period. Despite ending the day shooting just 28.4 percent from the field, Kansas made all 10 of its attempts from the free throw line, the second time this season the Jayhawks went perfect from the charity stripe.
Thomas was the only Jayhawk to notch a double-digit scoring performance, ending the day with 12 points.
A trio of Cowgirls led the charge for Oklahoma State. Sophomore Vivian Gray and Braxtin Miller each fell just shy of notching double-doubles, as Gray finished with 26 points and eight rebounds, while Miller chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Kassidy De Lapp added 10 points and six rebounds.
NOTABLES
- Kansas connected on all 10 of its attempts from the free throw line, marking the second time this season that the Jayhawks have shot 100 percent from the charity stripe.
- Kansas’ 17 points in the first half are the second-fewest points in the opening half this season.
- The Jayhawks shot below 30 percent for only the third time this season, connecting on 28.4 percent of their attempts.
- Freshman Aniya Thomas matched her career best, snagging two steals against the Cowgirls.
- With one steal against OSU, senior Kylee Kopatich is nine steals away from passing Jaclyn Johnson and moving into 10th in the Kansas record books for steals with 192 through her career thus far.
- After playing 30 minutes at Oklahoma State, Kopatich now sits seventh all-time for minutes played with 3,778 career minutes to date.
