Kansas falls to No. 25 Oregon in season opener

TEMPE, Ariz. – Kansas (0-1) softball’s late push against No. 25 Oregon (1-0) was not enough as the Jayhawks dropped their season opener against the Ducks, 14-5, at Farrington Stadium.

Oregon opened up the scoring fest for the Ducks early, plating two runs in the first inning off Jayhawk starting pitcher Brynn Minor. Minor didn’t find success in the second inning either, allowing a three-run home run by Oregon’s Rachel Cid.

The Ducks continued to pad their lead after Hannah Todd replaced Minor to start the third inning, netting one run in each of the next three innings.

The Jayhawks did find success in the fifth inning after Sydnee Ramsey launched a double into right center field, the Jayhawks first hit of the game. A wild pitch by the Oregon starting pitcher and groundout by Madison Sykes netted KU its first run of the season.

The Ducks added two more runs in the sixth inning off a two-run home run by Hannah Galey, extending their lead to 10-1, but Kansas would respond.

Ramsey continued her power streak that started the KU offense earlier in the day, launching the first of two two-run home runs in the innings. Beck Monaghan added the second two-run blast, cutting the lead to 10-5.

The Ducks concluded the season-opening affair with another four-run outburst, pushing their lead to a near-insurmountable 14-5 lead with only three outs to go.

KU had no answer in the bottom of the seventh, but is scheduled to play Stanford following a brief intermission following its game against Oregon.
