Kansas falls to Campbell, beats Charleston Southern
RALEIGH/DURHAM, N.C. – Kansas (4-14) split the final day of competition at the NC State Invitational and Duke Invitational, falling to Campbell 9-3 in the first game of the day and beating Charleston Southern 6-0 to complete competition.
The shutout victory against Charleston Southern was the first shutout since March 21, 2018 at Incarnate Word, when the Jayhawks won 5-0 in San Antonio, Texas. The shutout was also Brynn Minor’s first as a Jayhawk.
Campbell 9, Kansas 3
Kansas (3-14) started their final day of the NC State Invitational against Campbell (5-12), falling 9-3 at Dail Softball Stadium.
Campbell attacked early and scored one run in the first inning and two in the second off Kansas starter Lexy Mills.
The Camels tacked on three additional runs in the third inning following a pitching change to Tarin Travieso. Travieso pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts.
Down by six and with two outs in the third inning, Madison Sykes approached the plate and tallied a solo home run to center field.
Campbell responded in the fourth and added another run, extending its lead back to six.
Sykes again played the hero for the Jayhawks in the fifth and plated two on a RBI single to left field.
The Camels netted two insurances runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Mandy Roberts replaced Travieso and pitched the final 1.1 innings, while allowing only one run.
Kansas 6, Charleston Southern 0
After opening the final day of competition with a loss, Kansas (4-14) rebounded to beat Charleston Southern (5-15) 6-0 at the Duke Softball Field.
The Jayhawks and Buccaneers each were scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth, when Kansas finally found success at the plate.
Sydnee Ramsey started the inning with a double and later scored on a single by Sykes.
After a Minor single to center field, Jennifer Marwitz hit her first career triple to plate two Kansas runners.
Shelby Hughston followed and laced a double off the left field wall to plate Marwitz, which completed the four-run fifth inning.
The Jayhawks continued to attack the CSU pitching, plating two additional runs in the sixth.
Sykes earned her fifth RBI on the day with a bunt single, while Minor netted an RBI on a single down the left field line.
Minor pitched her fourth complete game of the season, earning her second win.
NOTES
- Shelby Gayre reached base for the sixth-consecutive game on a walk in the first inning against Campebell. Gayre later left the game due to injury.
- Lexy Mills has recorded at least three strikeouts in four appearances this season, tossing three strikeouts against Campbell.
- Madison Sykes has a team-high seven multiple hit games and logged two hits against Campbell and two hits against Charleston Southern.
- Sykes logged her second and third multiple RBI games, finishing with three RBI against Campbell and two against Charleston Southern.
- Kansas recorded four runs in the fifth inning against Charleston Southern. KU has recorded four runs in one inning only two other times in 2019 – four runs against Oregon in the sixth inning on Feb. 8 and four runs against UMASS on Feb. 15.
- The Jayhawks amassed two triples in the NC State and Duke Invitational and are halfway to their 2018 total.
- Minor recorded her first career shutout as a Jayhawk, pitching a complete game and allowing only two hits to Charleston Southern.
- The shutout victory is the first since Kansas beat Incarnate Word 5-0 on March 21, 2018.

Kansas returns home to face SEMO, Maine and UMKC in the Jayhawk Invitational on March 8-10. The Jayhawks home opener is scheduled for March 8 at 4 p.m. (CT) against SEMO at Arrocha Ballpark at Rock Chalk Park.
