Kansas records multiple victories against Creighton
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas rowing claimed victories in three of four races against Creighton on Friday evening at the KU Boathouse on the Kansas River.
The four events featured the Jayhawks’ Third Varsity Eight, Fourth Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Four and Fourth Varsity Four. For several shells that don’t see race action as often, it was a great opportunity to leave it all out on the water.
“It was really great today to get a lot of our student-athletes, who don’t get to travel with us, a nice solid race in front of friends and family,” said Kansas Head Coach Carrie Cook-Callen. “It was awesome to see how excited they were to put on the Kansas uniform, some of them for just the second or third time. They really raced at a high level today.”
KU’s largest win of the evening came from the Third Varsity Four in the third race of the afternoon. Mawson’s Mission hit open water and never looked back as the Jayhawks finished with a time of 7:03.5, crossing the finish line 30 seconds in front of second-place Creighton.
“It was really exciting to see all the hard work the student-athletes have been putting in really pay off today,” said assitant coach Madison Hovis. “For some of them, it was their very first racing experience and to come out with a win really sets us up for the rest of the season.”
In a close race, Kansas’ Third Varsity Eight pulled out another win, beating Creighton by two seconds with a time of 6:07.9.
KU’s Third Varsity Eight, Jayhawk Nation, was coxswained by sophomore Emma Yowell and powered by sophomore Anna Van Driel, senior Valerie Swisher, freshman Maggie Habben, sophomore Julia Isbell, freshman Isabelle Finzen, freshman Margo Hunter, sophomore Kaeli Nielson and freshman Addie Kershner.
KU’s Amelia closed out the night with the third win and a time of 7:04.3. The Jayhawks’ Fourth Varsity Eight crossed the finish line in 6:45.0, good for second place.
