RCW: A Look Back 3.35
As the baseball team begins its path to the 2017 Big 12 Championship crown, let’s take A Look Back to the 2006 Big 12 Baseball Tournament.
Play for the sixth-seeded Jayhawks began exactly 11 years ago today, with a showdown against No. 13 Oklahoma on May 24, 2006. The Jayhawks won game one by a score of 7-2, advancing to play #12 Oklahoma State in the second round. After defeating the Cowboys, 11-6, the team would face Missouri in the semifinal. Missouri tied the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, but Kansas scored the winning run on a Missouri error in the bottom of the eighth.
The 4-3 victory over Missouri put Kansas in its first-ever Big 12 Championship game. With an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line, the Jayhawks faced off against No. 14 Nebraska and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just two and 1/2 innings, and claimed the victory, 9-7. It was the program’s first conference title since winning the Big Seven regular season in 1949.
The 2006 Baseball Big 12 Championship ring is on exhibit in the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, located at Allen Fieldhouse.
