RCW: A Look Back 4.29

As April 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Men’s Basketball NCAA Championship, let’s take A Look Back at the watch party at Allen Fieldhouse.

On April 7, 2008, fans streamed into Allen Fieldhouse beginning at 7:30 p.m. By tipoff at 8:21 p.m., somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 Jayhawk faithful filled the upper two levels of the arena, ready to cheer their team to a national title. They reacted to every play as though the game was happening on-site, and at the end of the game the Rock Chalk Chant echoed through the rafters. One unusual thing happened, though, and that was a court rushing. With 18.2 seconds left in overtime, as Sherron Collins stepped to the free throw line to add the final two points to the score, fans streamed onto James Naismith Court to celebrate the program’s third NCAA Championship before heading to downtown Lawrence to continue the festivities.
