RCW: From the office of ... Laura "Bird" Kuhn
With Kansas volleyball spending spring break in the “Aloha State” to play an exhibition match against the University of Hawaii, take a look into the office of Associate Head Coach Laura “Bird” Kuhn. To read more about the Jayhawks’ trip to the islands, click here.
Volleyball associate head coach Laura “Bird” Kuhn has three cherished items in her office: her Michael Jordan poster (left), an inspirational quote from a former coach (top right) and an Energy Bus painting by a former student-athlete (middle).
The quote in the frame at the top right, “What did I do today to make myself a better person and a better player” has been at each coaching stop of her career, which has featured a stay at the University of Miami before helping the Jayhawks advance to the NCAA Final Four in 2015 and win a Big 12 title in 2016.
Michael Jordan is Bird’s favorite athlete dating back to her days as a high school basketball player in Ohio. Two years ago, Bird was gifted the iconic poster by her sister and it has held a prominent spot in her office ever since.
Finding ways to motivate her student-athletes is always at the forefront of Bird’s mind. A few years ago she shared motivation from the book, The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy by Jon Gordon, with her student-athletes. One of those student-athletes, Tayler Soucie, painted the 10 rules on canvas as a way to thank Bird for bringing so much energy to the program every day.
